What are the health consequences of overweight and obesity for adults?
Overweight and obese individuals are at increased risk for many diseases and health conditions, including the following:
- Heart attack (coronary heart disease)
- Stroke
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Diabetes mellitus (elevated blood sugar)
- High cholesterol (for example, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides)
- Gallbladder disease
- Osteoarthritis (degeneration of joints and joint pain)
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
- Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
Other Risk Factors for heart attack or stroke or sudden death.
Besides being overweight or obese, there are additional risk factors to consider.
Risk Factors :
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High blood glucose (sugar) (diabetes)
- High LDL-cholesterol (”bad” cholesterol)
- Low HDL-cholesterol (”good” cholesterol)
- Cigarette smoking
- Family history of premature heart disease
- Physical inactivity
